This Cottage Grove backyard went from a basic set of wooden steps leading to bare dirt and dead grass - to a clean, finished 12x26 stamped concrete patio. No outdoor living space at all before. Now there's a solid, good-looking slab that actually gives the backyard a purpose.

Here's what went into it. The patio is poured at 4 inches nominal thickness and reinforced with fiberglass throughout the mix. That's not something you can see from the surface, but it matters a lot for long-term durability. The slab isn't going to spider-crack on you.

The finish itself is a stamped texture across the field with a stone-pattern border running the perimeter. Integral color is mixed directly into the concrete so the color won't chip or peel like a surface coating would.

One thing we don't skip on these jobs is the site work. The fill dirt and topsoil pulled out during excavation didn't leave the property - we used it to build up and regrade the lawn along the high side of the patio. That ensures water drains away from the slab instead of pooling next to it. The disturbed areas around the patio are seeded to get the lawn re-established and the soil stabilized.

A lot of contractors pour the slab and walk away. We think the grading and turf work is just as important as the concrete itself. A patio that drains correctly and sits in a finished yard is what actually makes the whole backyard usable.
