This customer had a tired front landscape bed with an old tree that had seen better days, worn-out plants, and rock that just wasn't doing the space any favors. It's one of those situations where a fresh start makes a lot more sense than trying to patch things up.
We pulled everything out - the existing rock, plants, and the old tree - and started clean. The centerpiece of the new bed is a Royal Star Magnolia in tree form. It's a great choice for this spot. It'll fill in nicely over time and give the front of the home real structure without going overboard.
Around the magnolia, we planted six Coral Bells, six Creeping Phlox, and six Iris. That mix gives you color at different heights and textures that play well together. The Coral Bells add that deep burgundy pop you can see dotted throughout the bed, and the Iris blades give it a clean vertical element. We finished the bed with fresh 1.5-inch river rock and a mulch ring around the base of the tree to hold moisture and keep the root zone protected.
We also replaced a Red Prince Weigela on the property - swapped it out with a healthy 5-gallon pot. Small change, but those kinds of replacements matter when you're trying to keep a yard looking intentional and well-kept. Every plant counts.
Whether a bed needs a full gut-and-replace or just a targeted swap, we handle both. Homeowners in Cottage Grove and the surrounding area trust us to make decisions that hold up long-term - not just look good on day one.
