This customer's garden beds had seen better days. Old ground cover and vegetation had taken over, rocks were scattered without any real edging to hold things in place, and the garden fence had a few loose posts that needed attention. The whole area needed a reset.
We started by stripping out the existing ground cover and stockpiling the old rocks behind the shed. From there, we brought in dirt to regrade the beds so water drains away from the house instead of pooling against it. That part matters more than most people realize - poor grading causes long-term problems that go well beyond messy landscaping.
Once the ground was set, we installed vinyl edging along the perimeter of the beds to give everything a clean, defined border. Then came the separation fabric under the rock. The fabric keeps the decorative rock from migrating down into the soil below. It also helps slow weeds coming up from underneath.
On top of the fabric, we placed 2.5-inch river rock throughout the beds. That size sits well, doesn't shift around much, and gives a clean finished look. Over at the garden fence, we tightened the loose posts, added steppers outside the gate for easier access, ran small mesh fencing along the bottom of the gate to close off any gaps, and installed vinyl edging around three sides of the garden. Solar lights went in around the top of the garden as well - a nice finishing touch that adds visibility without any wiring.
This Cottage Grove property ended up with a much cleaner, more functional outdoor space. Everything from the edging lines to the regraded beds to the fence fixes was done with the next several years in mind - not just what looks good right now.
