This one had a lot going on - nearly 390 square feet of new patio, a full landscape bed overhaul, and a rock bed border running along the under deck area. The homeowner wanted something that looked intentional and high end, not just a basic concrete slab slapped down behind the house.

For the patio surface, we went with Unilock Umbriano Hex in Midnight Sky as the field paver. It's a hexagonal format that creates a really distinct, almost mosaic-like pattern across the surface. To frame it out, we ran a double sailor course border - Holland Premier Granite on the outer edge and Town Hall Basalt on the inner edge. That layering gives the whole patio a finished, structured look that a single border just can't pull off.

The base work is what most people never think about, but it's everything. We put down non-woven underlayment fabric, 8 inches of open graded base, and a 1-inch granite chip bedding layer before a single paver went down. That's a serious base. It's what keeps the surface stable through Minnesota winters year after year.

The landscape beds got the same level of attention. We pulled out the existing ground cover and edging, then installed Unilock Town Hall block edging - matching the paver line - to tie everything together visually. Fresh brown shredded mulch went into the main beds. For the area under the deck, we ran a paver border edge around the perimeter and filled the interior with 2.5-inch grey trap rock. Clean, low-maintenance, and it handles drainage well in a shaded spot like that.

A job like this in Woodbury isn't just about looks. It's about building something that lasts and actually functions well with the yard around it. Every material choice here was intentional - from the paver colors and profiles down to the base depth and border alignment. That's the difference between a patio that holds up and one that starts shifting after the first few winters.
