Hexagon Paver Patio Install in Woodbury MN

Sometimes a small space is actually the trickiest kind to get right. The goal was to add a usable paved surface without boxing in those downspouts or creating drainage headaches down the road.

We went with Unilock Hexagon pavers in a 3-color blend for the field. That mix of light, mid, and dark tones gives the surface a lot of visual depth without feeling busy. The border is a single sailor course of Unilock Town Hall Basalt - a clean, dark rectangle that frames the whole thing and ties it to the gray tones of the house really well.

The base system matters just as much as the pavers themselves. We used non-woven underlayment fabric, foam underlayment, and a 1-inch granite chip bedding layer. That combination gives the slab stability while still allowing for the movement Minnesota winters demand. We finished the joints with polymeric sand to lock everything in place and keep weeds from working their way up through the cracks.

We also planned an 8-inch trap rock strip around the back and sides of the patio. That strip keeps mulch and soil from migrating onto the paver surface, and it gives the downspouts a clean place to terminate without eroding the bedding layer over time. Little details like that are what keep a patio looking good years from now. We rounded the job out with a mulch refresh in the small planting areas flanking the patio and between the patio and the house.

The whole install came in right around 65 square feet - compact but hardworking. Woodbury homeowners deal with some serious freeze-thaw cycles every year, and the right base system makes all the difference in how a patio holds up long-term. This one is built to last.
