Old timber retaining walls have a lifespan and when they go, they really go. The before shots here tell the whole story. Dark, rotting timbers bowing under the pressure of years of freeze-thaw cycles, soil movement, and moisture. It's a common problem for homes in Cottage Grove and the Twin Cities.
Here's what we were working with: a failing timber wall running along the side of the house, right next to the basement windows. It was a real drainage and structural concern. Water management next to a foundation is something you don't want to gamble on.
We pulled everything out and rebuilt it the right way using Diamond straight retaining wall block from Belgard Products. The new concrete block wall runs 29 feet in total length. That's a serious wall, so we built it to last.
The base is 8 inches of 3/4-inch clear crushed limestone over geotextile reinforcement fabric. Behind that, 18 inches of clear limestone drainage layer with 4-inch drain tile at the base. Two rows of geogrid reinforcement extend behind the wall face for walls in the 3.5 to 4-foot range. Every layer has a job to do.
The drainage system built into this wall is what separates a wall that holds for decades from one that fails in five years. Water pressure behind a retaining wall is the number one cause of failure. By using a proper drainage layer, drain tile, and geogrid reinforcement, we're making sure this wall handles Minnesota's ground movement and water without budging.
The finished concrete block wall is clean, structural, and built to handle everything this Cottage Grove property can throw at it. No more rotting wood, no more guessing what's happening behind the wall. Just a solid, engineered solution that protects the foundation and looks good doing it.
