This customer had an old dry-stacked stone wall along a driveway that had seen better days. The stones were small, loosely stacked, and clearly losing the battle against frost heave and time. For a property with mature trees and a wooded setting like this one in St Paul, you need something that can actually hold its ground long-term.
We replaced it with Dresser Trap Rock boulders. If you're not familiar with Dresser Trap Rock, it's a dense, dark Minnesota stone that's incredibly durable and looks right at home in a wooded residential setting. We brought in up to 28 tons of it for the turnaround wall section alone - running up to 80 linear feet. A second wall along the driveway itself used up to 6 tons over about 28 linear feet.
One of the trickier parts of this job was navigating the existing trees. We curved two inside corners of the turnaround wall specifically to work around the root zones which did mean a slight reduction in turnaround area, but saved the trees. That's the kind of problem-solving that matters on properties like this. Protecting what's already there is just as important as what we're building.
Placing boulders this size isn't something you do by hand. We used a CAT mini excavator to position each stone precisely. That combo gives us the control to set heavy material tight and level without damaging the driveway surface. You can see the steel ground protection plates we used to keep the asphalt clean during installation.
The finished walls are clean, structured, and built to last. No more loose stone shifting. Just solid, natural material that fits the landscape and actually does the job it's supposed to do.
